Why do I need to know my IP?
- Whitelisting: Providing your IP to a system admin to gain access to a server or database firewall.
- Security: Checking if your VPN or Proxy is working correctly. If you see your real location here while using a VPN, you have an IP leak.
- Remote Desktop: Connecting to your home computer from work requires knowing your public IP.
IPv4 vs IPv6
IPv4 (e.g., 192.168.1.1) is the original standard. It ran out of addresses in 2011. IPv6 (e.g., 2001:0db8...) is the new standard with simpler packet processing and effectively infinite IP addresses.
Private vs Public IP
This tool shows your Public IP, which is assigned by your ISP and visible to the internet. Your device also has a Private IP (usually 192.168.x.x) used only within your home Wi-Fi network, which is not visible here.
