Understanding Readability Scores

Readability is a measure of how easy your text is to read and understand. Our analyzer uses the Flesch Reading Ease formula, one of the most widely-used and trusted readability metrics, along with the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level.

Flesch Reading Ease Scale

  • 90-100: Very Easy - Understood by 5th graders
  • 80-89: Easy - Conversational English
  • 70-79: Fairly Easy - 7th grade level
  • 60-69: Standard - Plain English, 8-9th grade
  • 50-59: Fairly Difficult - 10-12th grade
  • 30-49: Difficult - College level
  • 0-29: Very Difficult - Graduate level

Target Readability by Content Type

  • Blog posts: Aim for 60-70 (plain English)
  • Marketing copy: 70-80 (easy to understand)
  • Technical docs: 40-60 (acceptable complexity)
  • Academic papers: 30-50 (higher complexity)

Tips for Improving Readability

Use shorter sentences. Choose simpler words when possible. Break up long paragraphs. Use bullet points and headers. Read your text aloud - if it's hard to speak, it's hard to read. Our tool helps you identify where to focus your editing efforts.
