What is "Ideal Weight"?

Ideal Body Weight (IBW) is a concept used to determine a weight range typically associated with maximum life expectancy and lowest health risks. It is calculated based on height and gender.

Comparison of Formulas

Different researchers have proposed different formulas over the years:

  • J.D. Robinson (1983): Often used for drug dosage calculations. Generally gives slightly higher values for taller men.
  • D.R. Miller (1983): Often used to estimate lean body mass.
  • B.J. Devine (1974): The most widely used formula, especially in medical settings for dosing medications like Theophylline or Digoxin.
  • G.J. Hamwi (1964): One of the earliest formulas, simple to calculate manually.

Context Matters

IBW formulas do not account for muscle mass, bone density, or age. A bodybuilder might weigh well above their "ideal weight" but be perfectly healthy. Conversely, an elderly person might be at "ideal weight" but have low muscle mass (sarcopenia).

Healthy Range

Instead of fixating on a single number, aim for a weight where you feel energetic, your blood markers (cholesterol, sugar) are healthy, and you can move with ease.
