GPA vs. CGPA
- GPA (Grade Point Average): Typically calculates performance for a single semester or term.
- CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average): The average of GPAs from all completed semesters. It represents your overall academic performance throughout the entire duration of your degree.
How It Is Calculated
The standard formula for CGPA is the mean of the GPA of all semesters. However, accurate calculation requires weighting by credits. The formula is:
CGPA = Σ (Semester GPA × Semester Credits) / Total Credits
Simply averaging the GPA of each semester (e.g., (8.5 + 9.0) / 2) is only accurate if every semester has the same number of credits.
Importance of CGPA
A high CGPA is often a prerequisite for job placements, internships, and admission to higher education (Master's/PhD). Many companies have a minimum CGPA cutoff (e.g., 7.0 or 8.0) for campus recruitment.
